Agnes Macphail – Governance Strength Overview

🧾 Bills Sponsored (1921–1940)

Agnes Macphail was elected in 1921 as the first woman ever to serve in the Canadian House of Commons, representing the rural Ontario riding of Grey South East. As a member of the Progressive Party and later the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), Macphail introduced and supported numerous bills and motions focused on prison reform, agricultural equity, peace and disarmament, and women’s rights. While her private bills often faced institutional resistance, she played a critical role in mainstreaming debates on fairness, justice, and inclusivity in Parliament.
